Safety & privacy
An experiment, not a safety device.
Vision Assist is an early research prototype. It is not a medical device, not a replacement for a white cane, guide dog or mobility training, and not a guaranteed real-time warning system.
Safety principles
How we design for safety.
Complement, never replace
Vision Assist adds information on top of a cane, guide dog or mobility training. It is never a substitute.
Say when unsure
Low-confidence detections are filtered out or flagged, so the app doesn’t overclaim.
Fewer, better alerts
Urgent hazards interrupt; everything else waits. Repeated alerts are limited to avoid overload.
Test with real people
Every major change is tested with blind and partially sighted users before release.
Limitations
What it can’t do yet.
- It is a research prototype. It has not been clinically tested or certified as a medical or safety device.
- The web demo uses a general model trained on everyday objects. It does not yet detect curbs, steps, poles or manholes.
- Detection can miss objects or label them wrongly, especially in low light, rain, glare or crowded scenes.
- Distances are estimates from object size and image depth, not measurements. Treat them as a guide.
- Alerts can be delayed. It is not a guaranteed real-time warning system.
